Our Orthopedic Testing Services

Before an orthopedic issue can be treated, the root cause must be diagnosed. To do so properly, different types of testing are done to give physicians a clearer view of the problem. These can include imaging tests, flexibility tests, muscle tests, and laboratory studies. At Southlake Orthopaedics, we offer testing like:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scans

An MRI scan is a type of imaging that uses a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of the internal parts of the body. MRI images provide strong contrast between different types of soft tissue, so they are ideal for evaluating injuries and conditions in the muscles and joints.

At Southlake Orthopaedics, we have our own MRI machines at our Hoover and Grandview locations that are accredited by the American College of Radiology. Our MRI facilities are staffed by board-certified radiologists and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)-certified technologists.

Electrodiagnostic Testing

Electrodiagnostic testing involves measuring the electrical activity in a patient’s nerves and muscles. It helps diagnose orthopedic injuries and diseases that may slow or stop electrical signals. Two tests are commonly used: electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). These tests are typically administered by neurologists or physiatrists and can often be performed at one of Southlake Orthopaedics’ locations.

Your orthopedist may recommend electrodiagnostic testing for various conditions that can result from pressure on a nerve, particularly in the arm, elbow, or wrist. These conditions are known as compressive neuropathies and include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: pressure on the median nerve as it passes between the wrist bones and under the transverse ligament
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome: pressure on the brachial plexus, a cluster of nerves that passes under the collarbone at the shoulder
  • Ulnar nerve entrapment: pressure on the ulnar nerve as it passes behind the elbow
  • Cervical radiculopathy: pinched nerve, pressure on the nerve roots as they exit the spinal column at the neck

NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY

Along with MRIs and electrodiagnostic testing, we also offer additional testing on-site, including:

  • Arthrography of the hip and shoulder
  • Joint aspirations
  • Laboratory studies
  • Muscle tests
  • X-ray
  • Functional baseline evaluation
  • Flexibility tests

Our team of board-certified orthopedic physicians works diligently to determine the cause of your pain, provide a diagnosis, and offer suitable treatment options, such as surgery or rehabilitation.
